You Are That – The Ancient Truth Modern Souls Need to Remember
“Tat Tvam Asi” – “You are That.”
– Chandogya Upanishad
Have you ever stood in silence under a starlit sky and felt like you were part of something so vast, so sacred, it made you want to weep with wonder?
That feeling – that sacred pause in your soul – is the beginning of remembering who you really are.
Ancient wisdom has been whispering this truth through scriptures, chants, parables, and dreams for centuries:
You are not separate. You are That.
Today, I want to unpack this divine mystery with you – not as a philosophy lesson, but as a soulful remembrance that you can feel in your bones.
🌿 1. “Tat Tvam Asi” – You Are That
This phrase comes from the Chandogya Upanishad, one of the foundational texts of Vedanta. In it, a sage teaches his son a sacred truth:
“That which is the subtle essence, this whole world has as its Self.
That is the True. That is the Self.
And you, O Shvetaketu, are That.”
It’s like the universe is whispering:
You are not just a part of creation – you are creation.
The drop is not apart from the ocean. The drop is the ocean, just expressed in a smaller form. The same Divine Source that holds galaxies together also pulses in your heart.
That means:
You are not lost.
You are not broken.
You are not alone.
You are That – the Divine, clothed in skin, moving through life as you.
🕯️ 2. Kabbalah: The Light Within the Vessel
In Jewish mysticism, especially in the Kabbalistic tradition, we find a parallel truth.
At the center of Kabbalah is the idea of Ein Sof – the Infinite Source. From this unknowable Divine radiates Or Ein Sof, the Infinite Light, which pours into the world through ten divine channels called the Sefirot.
According to Kabbalists, every soul contains a spark of this original Light. Even when that light gets “hidden” or “forgotten” through pain, ego, or distraction, it never disappears.
Your purpose?
To remember that you’re not just a human doing – you're a Divine being.
You are a spark of that great, Infinite Light.
You are That.
Rabbi Isaac Luria taught that we are here to gather the scattered pieces of the Divine and make the world whole again. And the beautiful thing is, every act of love, forgiveness, or creativity is part of that restoration.
🌐 3. Indigenous Wisdom: The Web of Life
Long before religions became institutionalized, Indigenous people all around the world lived by a sacred truth: All is connected.
The Lakota people say: “Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ” – All my relations.
This isn’t just about family – it means every tree, every river, every animal, every rock is part of your soul's family.
In Southern Africa, the San people speak of a life-force that flows through all beings – a shimmering interconnected web where nothing lives in isolation.
To harm the earth is to harm yourself.
To honour another being is to honour the Spirit within you.
So again, this echoes: You are That.
The soil under your feet.
The rain nourishing the fields.
The breath of the ancestors moving through your body.
You’re not outside of nature. You are nature remembering itself.
🧬 4. Science Catches Up: You Are Stardust
Here’s the part that gives me goosebumps: Modern science is now echoing these ancient truths.
-
The Big Bang theory teaches that all matter was once compressed into a singular point. That means everything – stars, mountains, giraffes, you and me – came from the same sacred explosion.
-
Quantum physics shows that particles are connected across space. They respond instantly to each other. Scientists call it entanglement. Mystics call it oneness.
-
Even your body is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that once lived inside stars. You are literally stardust walking in human form.
So when you look at someone and feel that deep connection, it’s not sentimental fluff. It’s science confirming what sages and shamans always knew: We are not separate. We are One.
🧘♂️ 5. What This Means for Your Life (Right Now)
This isn’t just a poetic concept – it’s a transformational lens through which you can live every day.
When you live from the awareness that “You are That”:
-
You start seeing your worth as sacred, not based on productivity or approval.
-
You treat others as reflections of yourself – worthy of compassion, grace, and dignity.
-
You find peace in uncertainty, because the same Source that birthed stars is breathing through you right now.
-
You become a healer, not by fixing others, but by seeing their light and reminding them of it.
Even your struggles, your doubts, your messy emotions – they are part of the dance of the Divine experiencing itself through you.
🌌 A Closing Blessing from the Mystics
“There is a light that shines beyond all things on earth,
beyond us all, beyond the heavens,
beyond the highest, the very highest heavens.
This is the light that shines in your heart.”
– Chandogya Upanishad
“You are not a drop in the ocean.
You are the entire ocean, in a drop.”
– Rumi
✨ Final Thought
So the next time you sit quietly, feel the stillness inside you, or see a stranger’s eyes light up with joy, whisper this truth gently to yourself:
Tat Tvam Asi — You are That.
Not later. Not someday. But now.
Let’s live from that place.
